OK!! What have they done with our Jackie? Who is this clone look-alike? There. That's a much clearer video of what we've seen before. And it's what I liked earlier. You can see that slowly Jackie is beginning to assimilate Will N.'s direction to change her from adorable granddaughter to hot chick. She's not there yet. Still a little awkward and comes off sometimes as overly frantic in her efforts to project hot chickness. But she's got the concept and is trying to perfect it in a very difficult arena. Can't imagine anything worse for a VERY sheltered and still quite immature teenager than to have to do all that in "intimate" proximity with a bunch of strangers. Even if they ARE enthusiastic.

So here is my review of the Feinstein's/54 Below concert. Since it coincided with the NY Auto Show, I did a long weekend trip including NYC sight-seeing. After getting ready, I took Lyft up to the venue. Several stood outside prior to the 5pm doors open but then realized we could go into the stairwell and wait there with others. We were soon ushered in and shown to our tables. I had a rail seat in the bar area but still a perfect view of the stage ~25 ft from stage left. We were all served drinks and dinner. It was a small specialty menu. I chose a Bologna Fettuccine which was a bit spicy but good. After plenty of time for most to finish their meals, the lights dimmed. Pure Imagination started with the most angelic voice that we all know and love. My table mate whispered she was behind us. I got one good photo before she disappeared into the crowd and made her way on stage wearing a white pant-suit, open at the top, I do believe she did have a flesh colored blouse, best I can tell from my photos. After a second song (I think), she welcomed us, mentioned her love for Broadway and led into A Million Dreams. She then mentioned her love for The Phantom of the Opera and did 3 songs from that starting with Music of the Night. I did my best to get photos, a few video snips, and to just listen to the beauty and variety of her voice. As mentioned, at the end of The Impossible Dream, she ran off stage, almost tripping on her high heals, while the music played on. in just a moment, she reappeared in a short gold sparkly dress and finished the song. She then did her "China medley" of OMBC and Nessun Dorma. Sensational! She finished with Somebody to Love. All to soon the lights came up and it was over. Since I had an early train to catch, I scheduled a Lyft and went up to the entrance. In just a minute I was whisked away, only to miss a Jackie appearance and autographs. I've attached some of the photos I took.

When Jackie first let us know that Broadway was on her horizon's, I thought "But she's got no "fire, intensity, passion", which is needed on Broadway! A beautiful voice is not sufficient to excel on the Broadway stage!
Jackie needed to become more animated, to impart her Intensity, Excitement, Fire, Sensuality to the audience! And, that seems to be what Will N. is attempting to impart. This song shows us a Jackie we have never seen before! Park and Bark - Goodbye!!

BTW, maybe Jackie can get booked at City Winery? It is a chain of small performance venues that also serve food and drink like at Feinstein's 54. The one in Boston seats around 300. No minimum purchase there. In addition to Boston and NYC, there are ones in Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Washington DC. citywinery.com/boston/about.htmlSince you mentioned that there is one in DC and I had never heard of it, I looked it up. It's in Ivy City which is an area which I wouldn't consider going to after dark. Apparently, the City Winery is part of what may be changing this, but a short, old, white guy would be looking for trouble going there.

There you go again, Julia. Never acknowledge that Jackie has any other talent. Have you seen the videos of Jackie dancing on the boat as Grand Marshal of the Ocean City Parade and others? She has the moves and the spirit! Quite an attractive dancer, in my opinion. Will Nunziata isn't making her into anything, but allowing her to be herself. She has worn revealing outfits before with that false perception top, at The Cafe Carlyle for example, and shown off her legs many times. Of course he is giving her suggestion as concert director. But don't take anything away from Jackie being who she is, as if she were his puppet. This is Jackie's show and you know Jackie won't be told to do anything against her own judgement, as she explained in having insisted upon the album being done her way. You might suggest she's "awkward projecting hot chickness", from your perception. To mine, she IS a hot chick, in a classy and natural way, just being exuberant, feeling the music and being a lively teenage singer with this number, which she probably chose. She has become accustomed to small venues and intimate settings beginning with The Carlyle, being her first experience. And, she surpassed being an "adorable granddaughter" long before Will Nunziata came into the picture.

Absolutely. We are watching the first effects of Will N.'s tutelage and I expect by the end of the year we will see the polished mature performer. But you can imagine how tough it must be to learn to do that right in amongst the audience? Cabaret is not for the faint of heart. On a real stage, there's a distance. In cabaret, particularly if you're moving among the tables, you can see your audience warts and all.

Because she obviously felt or had been told she had to up her game to be an adult star. Just as in a play, the director tells the performer(s) how to best "sell" the show, the concert director does the same for singers or other musicians. Jackie has been singing for an audience of one for the last several months, in order to take her act to a higher level. My God, who would not applaud her for that.

Of course she hired him for his experience in Broadway, not to be changed into something she isn't, as you suggest. And, we are commenting here on an encore selection, not the entire concert, when she wanted to cut loose for a finale and give folks a view of who she is as a vibrant and "with it" young woman. Let's not applaud Jackie for hiring Will, but for exercising her freedom to be herself on the stage, to dance and sing with genuine enthusiasm. Obviously, she determined to save it for last. I don't discount his influence, whatever it may be (and you don't actually know), but you seem to discount Jackie. She is his "Leading lady", not his protege, until we hear something different from her.

I think this post is fairly well reasoned and I think one thing more could be added. IMO Jackie is in a difficult situation, she is stuck between a concert director having a more mature, sophisticated and NYC chic view of what Jackie needs to become and a father who has been with Jackie as a sheltered child, teen and young woman. Above all he will see Jackie always as HIS daughter and I bet he will do everything to prevent her from becoming something like a Miley Cyrus --- but unfortunately sexuality sells. So Jackie will need to find some middle ground that satisfies both ---- if possible.

So Jackie will need to find some middle ground that satisfies both ---- if possible. I think Jackie has found a middle ground, Gordie. This tour is not an attempt to display herself a pop singer with "hot chickness". I ask rhetorically, how much more need she bare to sell Broadway songs, and how much more animated need she become than to demonstrate her emotion with gestures and expressions that come naturally to her? She may become more refined and gain finesse as she progresses. This one song was obviously intended to be a finale attraction at this venue, but may or may not be a standard for her tour. Even if it is, didn't she "turn it on" sufficiently to show her versatility? I think too much is being made about this singular performance and unnecessary conclusions are being drawn from it. It was what it was. Let's see what she brings with the first actual concert. What about the rest of the show? Nothing from Julia about any of the other songs and how she presented them, rather focusing on the one pop song she chose as an encore to determine what she needs to learn to improve her style. It was beautiful that she sat on a stool to sing "Requiem", with a lead-in to "Falling Slowly".

Jackie has expressed interest in performing in a Broadway musical. Rather than going to an artsy school for two to four years, she's hired a concert director with relevant competencies, and working together with him has already made significant changes.
I think that certainly contradicts any narrative about lack of ambition or drive or diverse experience or even training - to learn by doing rather than in a more structured environment is a good choice for some people.
And for any that might feel that what they like best has been abandoned, look at the darn set list: even with a new tour and album and new objectives, more than half of it is still well within the bounds of what we've come to expect from her.
It's not either-or, it's both-and; or starting from the familiar and expanding beyond, without abandoning anything. That too, is pretty much what she's said, and by the evidence, what she's doing.
