"Jackie Evancho Grows Up and Sings Broadway and More at Feinsteins/ 54 Below"
Great article. Her surprise, 'Somebody To Love', probably the way she sang and moved to it. But do not forget it is a huge song from Queen. A huge song in the movie 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Also, a song in the broadway show 'We Will Rock You.' And a whole bunch of other stuff. Pardon the error. Didn't know we had a proper pronoun police.

"Jackie Evancho Grows Up and Sings Broadway and More at Feinsteins/ 54 Below"
Very good review, just a few comments from this article: " … Then the beautiful singer lapsed into “Music of The Night”, “The Point of No Return” and “All I ask Of You” from The Phantom of the Opera. This girl is the perfect Christine and really should be playing this role on Broadway …" " … and “Once Upon a December” from Anastasia also made the list. Anastasia is another role that is perfect for this young star …" " … Her musical director John Swart was on piano, Horace Bray was on guitar, Leon Boykins was on bass and Devin Collins was on drums. These are all musicians at the top of their game …" " … You can see Jackie Evancho at Feinsteins/ 54 Below June 11th, but make sure to RSVP because this girl has a major fan base …"

"Jackie’s show, was written and directed by acclaimed theatre and concert director Will Nunziata. He really knew how to blend the different qualities of Ms. Evancho’s voice so that her appealability is met with a broader range." -Suzanna Bowling, T2C.
Will's influence is obvious in having helped Jackie discover her full voice with greater power in both the low and high register and to vocalize in a more dynamic way, while losing nothing of the beautiful quality that has been and remains her signature. Fortunately, Jackie found someone who would help enhance her voice while retaining all the attributes that have made her unique. Will has not tried to dramatically change Jackie's voice, but recognizing and appreciating her innate qualities, has helped develop her vocal skills by building upon them, not trying to restructure her technique.
Jackie's aspirations relative to Broadway have begun to open doors for her. Will has the experience and connections to help bring them to fruition, in time. Meanwhile she will be touring to promote The Debut and to refine her presentation of a concert repertoire which still consists of fan favorites in addition to her Broadway songs.
It is exciting to see Jackie so thrilled with what she is doing.

Did she sing the at least part of every song from the new album? Yes, ursus. According to the set list above, she sang all ten songs, four of them "mash-ups" (transitions) -I'm Not That Girl with lead-in to She Used To Be Mine, and Requiem with lead-in to Falling Slowly. Note: All songs on the list but the "China Medley" are from musicals. Somebody To Love is from the musical "We Will Rock You" -Thanks Wayne.

Actually, technically Somebody To Love was written by Queen and first released on the 1976 album A Day at the Races. Then in 2002, the musical We Will Rock You was created and first played in London's West End. It is the 15th longest running musical in West End history. The musical has been produced all over the world and there is a new tour for 2019. I believe the musical has never played on Broadway even during its 2013-14 North American tour. The musical will be playing in Madison Square Garden this coming November 14 to 17. Thus, Somebody To Love is British through-and-through with no Broadway connection. However, it has been sung in a stage musical. The song Pure Imagination is from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and is sung by Gene Wilder (Willy Wonka) in the film. The original 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (from which the movie was also based) was made into a stage musical in 2013 and first was shown in London's West End. It was not until 2017 that the musical was reworked and finally had its Broadway production. It lasted for about 9 months on Broadway. The song Pure Imagination is sung in the second Act for both the London and the Broadway productions. It is argumentative, but both O Mio Babbino Caro and Nessun Dorma are actually from what could be called the original stage "musicals", known as operas. The Italian word opera means "work" and the first one was thought to be written in 1597. However, the first regular performance of an opera is believed to have occurred in 1607 for the court of the Italian city of Mantua. This city was ruled for 400 years by the Gonzaga family and later for 100 years by the Austrian Habsburgs. Mantua (also known as Mantova) was a center of Renaissance art and culture having produced hundreds of great works of art and architecture. You may recognize the name Mantua as this is the city Romeo was banished to in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. For those opera buffs out there, Mantua is important in the 1851 opera Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. The opera's story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's beautiful daughter Gilda. O Mio Babbino Caro is in the 1918 opera (i.e., "musical") Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini. Nessun Dorma is in the 1926 opera (i.e., "musical") Turandot also by Giacomo Puccini (he died in 1924 and it was finished by Franco Alfano). So one could say that Jackie sang all songs that were from "musicals", just not all that were sung on Broadway.

That is an informative post, geb. Thank you. Actually technicalities abound on this set list, although all the songs can be said to have been performed in "musicals". Actually, a few of the songs on The Debut were originally from films later performed on stage, and a couple did not debut on Broadway. To call The Debut an album of Broadway songs isn't quite accurate, but much simpler and easier as a description.
"Hamilton" debuted off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015
"A Million Dreams" is from the film, "The Greatest Showman" which premiered in 2017
"Falling Slowly" was first sung in the 2007 Film "Once", then performed on Broadway in 2011.
"Once Upon A December" was first sung in the 1997 animated film, "Anastasia", then on Broadway in 2017.
"She Used To Be Mine" was first sung in the 2007 film, "Waitress", then at the American Repertory Theater in 2015.
Though not a film, "Spring Awakening" (Whispering) was based on the 1891 play set in late 19th-century Germany, first presented on Broadway in 2006.

And of course, opera was an ancestor of musicals; OMBC is from Gianni Schicchi, and ND is from Turandot, both by Puccini. The line can even get blurry: www.operavivra.com/blog/opera-operetta-or-musical-theatre/So all of them came from one show or another. :-)
