Jackie is mentioned twice in this article. Search for Evancho.

Jackie singing "River" was just, meh. Doesn't stand out, bland, just nothing special at all. Mabye she'll have some stuff I really like when she releases the album in the spring...I hope.

Sounds good to me. Hopefully she comes up with some original songs. Don't end up like Linda Ronstadt did.

It took 4 plays ... and I like Jackie's rendition of a song I wasn't especially fond of. Nice and typically Nashville guitar backing her vocals. To my ear, this is "easy listening" style music. Another thought that crossed my mind while reading the lyrics was ... the last time Jackie sang a song like this was after her first serious boyfriend dumped her via a text message; i.e. Apocalypse. I hope this sad song isn't to lament something like that again. Finally, I'm not sure this is the kind of song that will excite the ears of potential new and younger fans or offer much help to those launching a new Nashville recording studio. But it is for those of us who love and have loved her stuff for a long time, very much more of what we know, love and expect from her. Not the break from her past she tearfully talked about as The Kitty ... yet.

She's young. She will likely have many more boyfriends. They will come and they will go...it's just a normal part of life.

I would love for Jackie to end up like Linda Rondstadt!!! 31 albums and over 100 million sold across many genres, R & R Hall of fame and one of the greatest and most respected singers from the 60's until early 2000's. One hellva career. Jackie should aspire to emulate her in every way.

And here's James Taylor's cover of River:
"James Taylor's adaption of Joni Mitchell's River. From the 2006 album "James Taylor at Christmas". "River" is a song from Mitchell's 1971 album Blue. Although never released as a single, it has become one of Mitchell's most famous songs. Rives has become rooted in the Christmas canon of modern singers with James' lonesome voice tailor-made for the tune.
I like this song for two reasons: although it's not about Christmas as such, nevertheless it gives you the "holiday- feeling" and above all it's about the miracle of skating: freedom.
In keeping with the Christmas theme of the lyrics, the arrangement of the song on Blue starts with a theme reminiscent of "Good King Wenceslas" and this theme figures several times throughout the accompaniment.
Although merely set near Christmas time rather than being about Christmas, the song ruminates on a recent breakup of a romantic relationship. Christmas is nearing, and Mitchell/Taylor longs to escape emotional bonds, openly wishing "I wish I had a river / I could skate away on", a river so long she "would teach my feet to fly." I think it's a strong metaphore to combine skating and freedom. To skate on a dark frozen river must come close to how it feels for a bird to fly. It's a feeling of freedom and it brings you to places you never see otherwise. For this reason I chose to illustrate this song with pictures of skating in a Dutch landscape."
River Joni Mitchell, James Taylor
It's coming on Christmas They're cutting down trees They're putting up reindeer And singing songs of joy and peace Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on But it don't snow here It stays pretty green I'm going to make a lot of money Then I'm going to quit this crazy scene I wish I had a river I could skate away on I wish I had a river so long I would teach my feet to fly Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on I made my baby cry
He tried hard to help me You know, he put me at ease And he loved me so naughty Made me weak in the knees Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on I'm so hard to handle I'm selfish and I'm sad Now I've gone and lost the best baby That I ever had Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on I wish I had a river so long I would teach my feet to fly Oh, I wish I had a river I made my baby say goodbye
It's coming on Christmas They're cutting down trees They're putting up reindeer Singing songs of joy and peace I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Ronstadt lost a lot of money from royalties.

Yeah and comparing it to the original, Joni Mitchell's version has much more emotion. Jackie's is pleasant, her voice still has a good range, but I don't feel anything much. The child Jackie really made me feel something, and it always seemed like she was channelling the soul of the artist. I don't feel that with this or with much that was on The Debut unfortunately.

Now that Jackie's doin' Nashville, let me suggest a much more positive allegorical role for the river than Mitchell's very sad and dower one about using it to escape the pain of love lost. Here's Diamond Rio's gem, The River. One of my favorite songs of all times, because it describes my experience with romantic love and that of many I know well. While it's sung by a man here, it's very gender neutral in its vocal range and application; and songs written for and sung traditionally by males have actually been some of Jackie's best. btw. btw: All the songs on the great album this one is from are keepers.
