I like it! When I first heard it, I felt an influence of Amy Lee, but this is Jackie expanding her horizon.

It`s like a little look into the future. If she has more time than a school girl we can expect an album with own songs of this style? Am I right to call it soul-rock ? The merry little girl grow up to a serious teenager who shows the talent to transpose her feelings into music. The next step of her career. Great.

The full version of "The Haunting". Original song written and sung by Jackie at Joe's Pub - sond check only! I'm very disappointed. This song is listless and lifeless. I hope it won't be on Two Hearts.

It`s a new style again after CC and POP-covers. If writing songs herself we discover her own feeling, not by listening the songs of others. May be this song will not come to an evergreen but for me is of matter the new style. Jackie tries everything and now I think to hear a little soul and rock. Changing the genres is a stress for the fans, she will lose some older and find younger only slowly. But she`s 16, time to discover the world and prove everything. In some years we`ll know her style, may be all other than today.

I'm not a big advocate of Jackie singing pop. On the other hand, I've always thought she could do more than just sing the greatest hits of classical crossover. I think at her age she's not had much exposure to the less popular genres where her singing style would be a better fit. I was fortunate to have attended one of the concerts where Jackie sang Blank Space. She's quite capable of putting some oomph into a pop song.

The song seems promising, the mix is horrible, so I'll wait to hear a studio version to make a final judgement. I do agree that this performance is not up to the current standards of the 'pop" culture, but I'm not sure I want her to adopt that standard (as if it matters what I want ).

To those who are disappointed in The Haunting: give it a chance! Jackie is just starting her songwriting efforts. It may take YEARS to get it right. Jagger & Richards didn't start till they were 21, & they came up with As Tears Go By. It wasn't even a Stones song, but it did become a hit for Marianne Faithfull. Sonny Bono famously had to work & work to get it right, & so did Leonard Cohen, who got quite frustrated trying to write songs at times.
As far as singing pop, personally I think we should give Jackie the space to sing whatever moves her. She'll find her voice. We just have to give her time - & I mean YEARS. She may not have given The Haunting a full effort during the sound check. Just give her a chance.

I'll probably be chastised and run out of town for this, but I can't hold back any longer. I've watched the full length video of Jackie's The Haunting from Joe's Pub several times, and this my takeaway! Jackie can't sing POP - Period!! I watched and listened to this 16 yo Lounge Lizard in her little black dress trying with all her might to sing a Pop song. It didn't work! She sounded wimpy! She sounded like a Classical singer trying to sing Pop! Pop singers, no matter the tempo, put some OOMPH into the song! Jackie just stands there, immobile, singing with a melancholy voice. I know this was just a sound check, but Sugar, you got to give a lot more than that to be considered a successful Pop singer. IMHO, of the 2 evils, CC is her forte! CC will keep bread on the table, Pop will not! JMO ☺♪♫ Alright, here I go... Just kidding, I agree with you to some degree, although the "lounge lizard in her little black dress" seemed a bit much. Not the best Jackie song I've heard, but there is something in there, a little nugget of something I can't put my finger on, almost bluesy, maybe a little smokey sounding, difficult to say. She definitely seemed reserved, holding back, maybe just extreme case of nerves showcasing her own song for the first time in public. We shouldn't totally discount Jackie's experimentation and trying out different sounds. We need to give Jackie a chance as she experiments and finds herself as she matures and grows. Doing more of the same isn't what Jackie wants, if she doesn't try new stuff she and we will never know what could have been and what will never be.

IMO, The Haunting a pretty good song and has more potential than All of the Stars and Apocalypse, considering only the melody and chord progression. Don't confuse the potential of the song with what you hear in this life recording in the pub. For instance, if the song "Over the rainbow" would not exist yet and I would just record it right now with me singing and playing the guitar then most would probably say it's a terrible song. I just hope Jackie will have a good producer for it who sees what (s)he can do with it and really gets the best out of it.

As I said before, Jackie is a masterpiece in the making. I really believe she should try it all - go for it, for all her talent and musical genius. She must find her own way. There are those who will tell her to stay with CC and classical only and in doing so silences her potential for all other music. Kind of reminds me of a song "Wanderers Lullaby". When I hear it I think of Jackie and where she is now.

I don't know if it was there at first, but judging from the several comments asking for lyrics, maybe it wasn't. Anyway, the lyrics are now in the description if you click "more". Also interesting is we hear the sound check, Jackie says the actual performance didn't sound as good! One might argue the wisdom of it, but I am grateful and impressed with her willingness to let us hear a work in progress. I can hardly wait for the studio version, and a more worked-out live version.

Doing more of the same isn't what Jackie wants, if she doesn't try new stuff she and we will never know what could have been and what will never be. OK! Maybe Lounge Lizard was a little much, but I'll stick with little black dress! Enough with the experimentation already! I was introduced to Jackie with Nessun Dorma, OMBC, Ave Maria, Think Of Me, etc. Her Danny Boy is a thing of beauty. Now we have Blank Space, Apocalypse, The Haunting. I understand her need to experiment and I understand the finding her of her niche in the music world, but she came on the scene a little girl with a very mature voice singing Classical songs. Unfortunately, the little girl grew up, but the voice is still more than capable of singing the songs the little girl sang. Jackie is timid and shy! Pop singers are outspoken and aggressive! I just don't think she has the chops to make it big in Pop.I'm just hoping that her album after Two Hearts (she'll be 17 then), will take us back to predominately CC. As I have said many times. I'm with her wherever she takes me, but don't ask me to enjoy every road she takes me down! JMO ☺♪♫ Well, you can still expect plenty of her CC at concerts, not to worry. I do have trouble with your comment, "Unfortunately the little girl grew up..." : I wonder what would be your preference! As for the portion I have bolded, it looks to me like we should not expect Jackie to ape what others do; she is her own self. There is precedent for different approaches in the pop world. Whether she will be commercially successful in it, it is WAY early to tell with a first effort, a rough version at that.

I was curious how much I would understand, so yesterday I tried to write down the lyrics as good as I could, sometimes when I didn't understand it really then I just wrote down words which sounded similar even when it doesn't make much sense. So here you can now see what a non-native english speaker (and someone not familiar with Pittsburgish at all) could understand from the lyrics (numbers mean syllables which I had no clue what it could be): My guess
6 haunt my mind Sadness is a comfortable surprise I'm sure that there's so much out there to find From now I know these monsters aren't so kind
How can you all so lie in this picture that's paradise It's you keeping me alive
CHORUS
There's a voice inside my head and it's leaving in my day It haunts you and it's all that I have made Never let them know it's 4 I'm gone It haunts you all I need forget
I know about now it's pointless to resist The voice I hear is sweeter than kiss Silence is a danger I admit So whisper in my ear that you'll me miss
How can you all so lie in this picture that's paradise It's you keeping me alive
CHORUS
I, I cry for you I, I reach for you Why should I cry 2 for you So why can't you cry for you
| Jackie's original lyrics
I know that there are ghosts that haunt my mind And sadness is a comfortable sublime I'm sure that there's so much out there to find For now I know these monsters aren't so kind
How long can we all survive In this pitch-black paradise It's you Keeping me alive
CHORUS
There's a ghost inside my head and it's leaving me for dead The haunting is all that I have left and I'll never let him go It's so dark and beautiful The haunting won't let me forget
I know by now it’s pointless to resist Your voice a bittersweet goodnight kiss Silence is a dangerous abyss So whisper in my ear let's reminisce
How long can we all survive In this pitch-black paradise It's you Keeping me alive
CHORUS
I cry for you I bleed for you Why should I fight cause it's no use Surrender to the night so cruel |

And the verses are neatly handled iambic pentameter, with a variant the second line of the second verse (where the unaccented syllable of the fourth foot is absent) allowing the voice to extend the emphasis on the last syllable of the word "bittersweet".
The lines "Silence is a dangerous abyss // So whisper in my ear let's reminisce", are very nice.

I am a diehard Jackie fan. I love Jackie and when she sings with her classical voice she is next to none.
The Haunting. In my opinion this song is really bad. After reading the lyrics I have no idea what the song is about. It's slow, boring, and it makes no sense. It's just a bunch of words strung together with no point. If this is her first try at song writing she should have thrown it away and started over. It should have never been recorded. Jackie has no future singing stuff like this.
