And you know better? Reading music is not a criterion for "musical ability". (Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Andrea Bocelli, etc..not equating her with them). Neither is writing a criterion for a vocalist. Jackie doesn't read music and hasn't had to. That's the point. At 10yrs she understood music without having to read it. If you knew how to read music and understand it, you might appreciate that. Obviously you don't, yet you persist in denying Jackie any musical attribute other than having a "pretty tone". Not too insightful. It seems you're the one who's "waiting and expecting great things from her", speaking for people. I know, it's all all about album sales, blah, blah. It may be a long wait for you, maybe never happen in your estimation. i have opinions , Anna Gracemen has written 60 songs , Miss Bear wrote and played her album at 6 years old , at is musical ability not just singing , i can sing btw i have insight as my mind and eyes and ears are open not like lots of Jackie fans , she knows her limits Beachguy, You either don't comprehend or you're just being obstinate...pulling my chain maybe. How may songs has Sarah Brightman written, or Katherine Jenkins, Julie Andrews, or Nana Mouskouri? Name an opera soprano among the hundreds who has written 4 songs or more. Jackie has written, though they weren't great songs by pop standards, but imaginative and from her gut. Your best shot isn't working here. You're reverting to ridiculing fans, as usual. I sing too....maybe a lullaby for you.

This video is just an opener to my post.
Women DO sing in falsetto, and Jackie is a master at it. For most, it is a necessity to reach beyond their natural range. For Jackie it is a technique for interpretation. One of Jackie's unique vocal characteristics is her deliberate use of falsetto to create a lyric (light) quality to a high note, or even in lower range, rather than belting it. She can and does sing a strong high note or phrase with her chest voice (power voice) when her interpretation calls for it, such as the second high note of MOTN, the last note of HGTA, and her recent final note of Nessun Dorma. Jackie does not rely upon falsetto to reach very high notes, as many singers must when it is above their chest voice range. In other words she chooses whether to sing with a power voice or falsetto depending upon the affect she wishes to emote. Jackie is not a power singer as such, but that doesn't mean she can't sing powerfully, when she chooses. What is extraordinary about Jackie's use of falsetto is that her transition from chest voice to head voice (falsetto) is uniquely "seamless". That is, there is no noticeable break at all in the voice or quality of her tone, generally apparent with most singers. The quality of her tone stays the same, although the dynamic changes. One of innumerable examples of her choice to us falsetto for effect is her performance of Caruso, when she "drifts" into falsetto for the last two phrases to create a soft ending to the song. An example of her intentional use of both chest and head voice in a particular song is the repeated line, "...No matter how long it'll hurt like this..." in Apocalypse. The first few times, she sings in falsetto (more lyric), and the last two in chest voice to increase the dynamic. But, she maintains the falsetto purposefully for the line "to lose you, really lose you". This "mastery" of falsetto is one of a few characteristics Jackie has developed naturally, probably because she discovered that it allows her more versatility in her interpretations. It's one aspect of her prodigious talent. Other singers are limited to their power voices or to having to depend upon falsetto to perform beyond their natural chest voice range. In my opinion. power singing, or "belting" is not always appropriate to a song, especially when falsetto is distracting. It can become tiresome to me. That's why I can listen to Jackie sing for hours and never tire of her voice. Jackie uses falsetto to sing with finesse.
Note: I am not an expert, just a music major in college and semi-professional singer (baritone), and this has been my observation.

I believe Jackie's tonsils were removed at age seven. Whether or not that was before or after this performance I don't know.
"Thank you QueenoftheNorth for continuing to do Jackie Evancho reactions. Yes, of course little 7 year old Jackie had limited singing skills such as breath control, but the VOICE was there, the gift was there. The main thing back then was that she had the drive and courage to perform. Jackie's dad was interviewed years ago and responded to some who questioned if Jackie was somehow being pushed into pursuing her singing career with words to the effect that neither he nor his wife could stop Jackie from performing even if they wanted to. Jackie absolutely loves to perform live in front of an audience. She is radiant onstage. I was at a tennis tournament in Surprise AZ about 4 years ago and was wearing a Jackie Evancho t-shirt. A man and his wife came up to me to say that they were from the same PA town where Jackie lives and that they had just seen her the week before at their grocery store. They then related a story that they were at a friend's house for a party back in 2006 and the Evancho family was there. Little 6 year old Jackie came up to them and asked if they would like to hear her sing!" -video comment

Whether or not that was before or after this performance I don't know. This performance was in March 2008 a couple of weeks before Jackie's 8th birthday. She had already had her tonsils out.

In your opinion, does any singer in this video have an equally or more beautiful and pleasing falsetto (head voice) than Jackie?
"Women DO sing in falsetto, and Jackie is a master at it. For most, it is a necessity to reach beyond their natural range. For Jackie it is a technique for interpretation." -lawrence, from post of Aug. 5 above.

"You would be surprised that she has INCREASED her range, even on the top end [but not by much]. Also, she does something cool with her voice and mic. When she sings toward a high note, she knows that it can be jarring, so she angles both herself and her mic so that her mouth is on the outer edge of the mic's pickup cone at the same time she is singing the note at an angle AWAY from the mic's cone to avoid overpowering the listener. Many many people find soprano notes to be shrill, so she sings them in a way that they are softened by her technique. This is done on purpose." -video comment
* This is an astute observation. Some have mistakenly asserted that Jackie began "cocking her head" as a physical effort, straining to reach the high notes, the kind of criticism expected from detractors. Jackie is an experienced performer who, I'm certain, has learned a great deal from professionals she has associated with since David Foster began working with her at a very young age. There are a number of techniques for using a mic for desired effects used by professional performers, each to suit his/her own vocal dynamics.
As we know, Jackie was 14 when she performed this Cassini version of Ave Maria at Longwood Gardens, her 3rd PBS special.

Rob and catmando,
Thank you for your responses.
Among these singers, I think Streisand has control of her head voice (falsetto) with the kind of ease and finesse that Jackie consistently demonstrates with a pleasing quality. For most of them, it's an effort (visibly straining) to remain on pitch, particularly when executing a run or a melody with wide intervals which is a common difficulty when singing in falsetto. It requires exceptional control. Although I find Lara Fabian's execution masterful, the quality is not as pleasing as Jackie's. Of course, our opinions are entirely subjective with regard to what is pleasing.

And Lara, because of her masterful vocal control would be high on any list of mine, Dion never was a favorite of mine, opinions do vary.
