I said I'd write about more of the songs on Monday. Just been tired and busy--bad combination.
The Way We Were -- Jackie said she was raised on Barbra Striesand, that her mother played it a lot and she'd always wanted to sing Streisand's music. I never cared much for the song, maybe because it was played to death on the radio when I was a teen. But Jackie really did sing it beautifully. My attention didn't wander. I hung on every note, anyway. During the medley, when Jackie spoke before Con Te Partiro, she mentioned proudly that she had performed it twice with Andrea Bocelli, once at his house, which was beautiful. We've heard her say that before, but this time she added, "Just to let you know...we still stay in touch", and then she smiled. Could that mean anything? Maybe not, but I hope so. Over the Rainbow-- I loved this. She sang those verses that we don't usually hear in other versions. I gave Jackie a SO at the end of this. Jackie looked right at me and smiled because no one else around me stood up. May It Be was beautiful and very calming, but not one to bring out the tears. So glad that MOTN is still in the show. Beautiful, powerful, flawless version; but I thought it was more spellbinding in Pittsburgh. I was very surprised—and pleased—when Jackie started singing All of the Stars. My favorite of the recent singles and I didn’t expect to hear it live. Very emotional, it reminds me of one reason it feels right to support Jackie, besides the music. She has ideals and she’ll act on them. Besides, the song is quite beautiful. Got goosebumps at the first chorus, “So open your eyes and…see”. How Great Thou Art I talked about in a previous post. Everyone stood for that one. We've Only Just Begun—Jackie said she’d always loved Karen Carpenter’s voice and was dedicating the song to her sister, Juliet, who is the bravest person she knows.
Vincent—I was so happy this was in the setlist. I have a bit of a history with this song. I’ve always thought it was one of the most beautiful songs ever written, since Don McLean first released it in the 70s. Beautiful lyrics: “In colors on the snowy linen land”, “Swirling clouds in violet haze/ reflect in Vincent’s eyes of China blue”. And how Jackie sings “China blue” makes me shiver. I had been watching videos over and over again of Jackie singing Vincent during 2012. I was really excited to hear it at my second concert, Costa Mesa, in December. But, I did not yet know that Jackie changed her setlist for Christmas. So, sadly, Vincent was gone. It was over two years before Jackie sang it again, which she did one time only, at Las Vegas, and thankfully I was there to hear it. She said she and Peter were just playing around with it earlier in the day. Here at Carmel Jackie prefaced the song by talking about how she was into art and how the song was about Van Gogh. Before one of his instrumentals, Peter said that he and Jackie had performed in many nice venues, but the Palladium was especially wonderful and people were lucky to have it. He’s right about that.
It has great acoustics and it's beautiful, looks like an outside-in wedding cake. And people really sit in the balconies, unlike other venues that have balconies but don't sell the seats for them.
