Listened to the Instagram clip of Jackie's. Behind My Eyes. I like it. But the more I listened to it, the more it reminded me of a 90s hit that I also liked, Love Fool, by the Swedish rock group, The Cardigans. Similar Euro beat. The melody of the Chardigan's chorus, "Love me, Love me, Say that you love me", is what caught my ear about a similar sounding melody in the chorus of Jackie's song. Not accusing her of anything. Just saying. See if you agree per the attachment of The Cardigans song.

Similar, but I wouldn't confuse the two. FYI, I had created a thread earlier "BEHIND MY EYES original by Jackie Evancho" under Jackie's Music which I thought a more appropriate subject than General Discussions About Jackie. It has 85 views at present. What do you think? Shall I delete my thread in favor of this one, or might your comments be posted under mine in Jackie's Music?

I just caught Jackie's peroformance of Behind My Eyes on GMA a few minutes ago. IMHO, the worst I've ever seen from her. Very likely due to being out of the limelight jitters, as in fact, GMA normally has 3 million plus viewers. She was terribly off key; her band overpowered her voice; her lyrics which she considers the songs message to potential fans were indistinguishable; she was overly made up and coiffuired; her outfit did not compliment her personality or character. Sad and very hard to watch for this longtime fan. Hopefully on to much better with the debut of her new album in March, although I'm not holding my breath. I don't believe the track she's on is going where she's hoping it will take her and that performance before a huge tv audience didn't help at all if building a new and bigger fan base is among her career goals.

Nevertheless, I and others disagree with your opinion. Comments on the YouTube video of Jackie's performance: "Thank you for this! Amazing Jackie! I love the performance, but it sucks a little that your song seems to have been cut a bit short. Also, really cool visuals and background music. I also absolutely love her hair and make-up. She looks radiant. Fantastic job you guys!" "....What a really great performance she look and sounded every bit the part of a Star."

"...terribly off-key..."
When has she ever been off-key in her whole life? That's one of the amazing things about her. I've never heard it. And certainly not terribly. Terribly is karaoke off key.

Jackie has never had what could be called a dominating voice. A high-pitched soprano sound is rarely dominating. Need mid and lower ranges to get a more dominating sound. As such, the musicians who support her either have to tone it down to allow her voice to come front-and-center, have the musicians feed dropped back in volume, or push Jackie's feed up in volume. Also, it seemed like a backing track was also added to the mix. One has to presume that the sound mix that was chosen was set during the soundcheck earlier. And, unless my ears have completely gone, Jackie did not sound flat to me. I have been to concerts where the musicians overpowered the singer. Effectively, the musicians stepped over the singer. Many times this was caused by the sound board engineer having the wrong mix that allowed the musicians to have too much volume relative to the singer. This was especially a problem when a drum set was included and the drummer was setup directly behind the singer at the same level such that the drum sound overpowered the singer, and the sound engineer could do nothing to prevent it. This was not the case here for Jackie on GMA. Here it was just that her softer soprano voice could not dominate enough, no matter how the musicians and backing track was mixed. All this can be fixed in a studio production where each channel can be mixed at whatever volume is required, but a live performance is a different beast. This is something that Jackie, or someone, needs to figure out how to address in live performances with Jackie wanting to go into the alt-rock and pop world of music. Jackie's soft soprano voice is not typical in these music genres. Here is a nice video by a professional singer (a trained opera singer but sings in all genres from opera and musical theatre to pop, rock, soul, folk and much more) and vocal coach Freya Casey (from Germany) on how to sing with a soft voice: Here is another nice video by Freya Casey on how to sing with a crystal clear voice: Take a look at Freya's other videos and also her website for lots more great info on singing. Her book Master Your Voice is also excellent. What I like about Freya is that she is providing you with a nice set of voice tools. I love how she demonstrates what she is talking about. Freya Casey's Master Your Voice websiteBTW, at the end of some of her videos are brief clips of Freya singing.

One has to presume that the sound mix that was chosen was set during the soundcheck earlier. The following is Cary Reynold's video of the GMA performance with a discussion in the comment section regarding the subject: @stevebrant55 20 hours ago Great performance and great video! Thanks! And I'm not sure but her vocals volume sounds a little louder than on the GMA channel's video. Did you bump up the volume? @caryreynolds1176 14 hours ago You're welcome. This was recorded from the over-the-air search broadcast with six channel (5.1) audio, which I mixed to stereo. I just checked and that stereo mix is a little over one decibel lower in volume than the YouTube upload by GMA, but I normalized the audio of this video for the performance part, so it is raised a little over 6 dB from my original recording and it would be a little over 5 dB louder than the GMA YouTube upload. Even aside from the higher volume of my upload, I think the audio quality is a little bit better. @stevebrant55 14 hours ago @caryreynolds1176 Thanks for responding to my comment. I just saw over on the GMA video that someone commented that the musicians "should have turned their amps down a bit". Seems to me that the sound check done earlier in the morning (I see on Jackie's social media that they performed the song earlier in their street clothes to work out how it would be filmed) didn't quite catch this problem. Still a great performance and Jackie looked amazing. But as in life things can always be improved. Thanks again for explaining what you did! @caryreynolds1176 12 hours ago (edited) @stevebrant55 Do they have any recording of the sound check on her social media? I'll have to check it out. If this were on NBC up to a few years ago I might've been able to correct the issue because NBC, for some of their shows like the Today Show, the Tonight Show, on Saturday Night Live and some of their live events like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, yes they separate feed for their lead singers microphone, which was maintained in the over the broadcast 5.1 audio, so the center track would be the isolated vocal. I have a number of recordings on this channel where I uploaded the isolated vocal version as well as the full mix version. You can search my channel for "isolated vocal". I have isolated versions that I didn't upload of some of Jackie's performances, like Your Love and Little Drummer Boy with Il Volo, and maybe a few others from NBC, but I didn't think the isolated vocal added anything because her voice came through pretty clearly with the background music in those cases. However a few years ago NBC started to premix all the tracks so the center track was mixed and the stereo track was mixed, etc. If this had been a case of having that isolated vocal I could have reduced the background music in proportion to the isolated vocal, but that's not the case anymore and it was only on NBC, although I'm going to look again at the 5.1 audio and see if there's anything that would help, but I doubt it. By the way the previous thumbnail for this video was one of the YouTube pre-selected ones, as I wanted to publish it quickly. But a little almost 2 hours ago I changed it for a custom made one, which I think is much better. @stevebrant55 9 hours ago @caryreynolds1176 There are no recordings of the sound check. Sorry. Just a brief, no-sound clip that was part of her overall "getting ready for the show" social media post. You obviously have great technical skills. Too bad there's nothing else out there you can use from her being on GMA that I'm aware of. @caryreynolds1176 3 hours ago @stevebrant55 Well, I have an audio engineer friend who taught me a lot about audio editing and other technical things, and he has more advanced software that can somehow reduce the background music, but it doesn't always sound better in my experience, but I can ask him if he can do anything. @rd1903 1 hour ago @caryreynolds1176 It sounds like, in addition to the musical instruments and her own vocal (mic) feed, there is also a backing track of her own voice being played that she is singing along with trying to replicate the studio recorded version of this song. To me it sounded like on the live performance that the sound tech had that backing track turned up louder than her own mic feed. It should have been the other way around.

Even aside from the higher volume of my upload, I think the audio quality is a little bit better. ... If I am not mistaken, YouTube will set a video to -13 LUFS (LUFS is a standard for Loudness Units) so that all videos have the same loudness on the platform (i.e., a home video will appear to be the same loudness as a symphonic orchestra performance). The recommended broadcast master video is -23 LUFS. If that was what was uploaded to YouTube, you can see why the video sounded "off" given that YouTube dialed it back to -13 LUFS. This also will downgrade the dynamic range. Sometimes a direct off-air video of a TV broadcast can be found that does not have these conversions and one can present a truer video of the recorded performance by careful manipulation and understanding what YouTube is doing to the audio. The Loudness Units are the way to quantify a piece of music’s perceived loudness by analyzing the average level over time. Music that registers identical LUFS readings should sound at the same level regardless of whatever the peak or RMS readings indicate. So, to have consistent levels among music tracks, one needs to check their LUFS readings and match them. Possibly the sound engineers did not do this between the recorded backing track and the live feeds? Hence the audio was suboptimal. And, the video uploaded by GMA also appeared to not be corrected to account for what YouTube would be doing to the audio. What Cary Reynolds did was try to correct the error made and did a decent job.
