The review was critical, but fair. No personal attacks or snarkiness, just honest opinions and observations. The author certainly hits upon some of my concerns, but s/he, not being a follower of Jackie, has missed the amount of experimentation she has done over the past two years. Jackie is still finding herself and I frankly think she knows what direction she wants to take but the tug of her past success has her moving slowly in that direction. Jackie doesn't want to abandon her roots, but her heart is definitely taking her into the more contemporary pop area. Her new single, Haunting, gives us a sense of that direction. The eclectic nature of Jackie's concerts also belies the conflict between where Jackie was and where she wants to go.
I am very much looking forward to Two Hearts and the new material. I do love Jackie's previous works, but I want to see the passion that she had during AGT and DWM once again. Perhaps Two Hearts will be her breakthrough album and revive that passion.

One last remark about Troy. Len and I were having breakfast at the hotel this morning and noticed Peter at the front desk. Shortly thereafter, Jackie, Peter, Mike, and another man we assumed was Will the sound guy came into the dining room. They seated themselves on the far side of the room, quickly ate and left. That's all. We didn't approach them, of course. But it was pretty cool.

Miketigfan: "No videos at all at this concert." Fans: I meant no videos playing behind Jackie during the concert. I'm not big on the background video in general. But it would have been fun to see the sister vs. sister gunplay of WOTW on the big screen. I don't know if fan videos will emerge of the performance. I did see an usher swoop down on a fan early in the concert.

R: "The review was critical, but fair. No personal attacks or snarkiness, just honest opinions and observations." PGA: Agree. R: "...has missed the amount of experimentation she has done over the past two years. Jackie is still finding herself..." PGA: Agree here too. R: "...her heart is definitely taking her into the more contemporary pop area." PGA: At least for now, yes. But she's experimenting & there's no telling where she'll end up. She may need years to find her voice, her identity, & she may change multiple times along the way. LGG had her pop hits, then sang with TB for a couple of years singing American standards/traditional jazz. Now she's going back on a "dive bar" tour. I won't be surprised if Jackie tries a lot of new things - & I actually hope she does. R: "Perhaps Two Hearts will be her breakthrough album..." PGA: Agree again. But hopefully she'll have more breakthroughs in the future. I've always wondered where Jackie would go as she grew up. Musical theater? Hollywood? Pop? Something totally unexpected? Time will tell. Edit: Of course I disagree with the reviewer about Jackie not expressing emotion. She does it remarkably well. I also don't agree that Jackie's eclecticism (e.g. mixing Cold Play & Puccini) is necessarily a problem. It's something she might even joke about. That IS something she could work on, being funny, more like Groban. And the reviewer gives a lot of credit to Jackie's beautiful voice.

A media review - somewhat critical! Note: The link below does not work! The entire article is quoted below the link! www.timesunion.com/tuplus-local/article/Review-Evancho-sparkles-alas-with-little-emotion-10638389.php"TROY - The young singer Jackie Evancho is in an awkward and critical period of growth as an artist. Now 16, she's no longer the angelic blonde who wowed judges and won over TV audiences as a child in 2010 during her run toward a second-place finish on "America's Got Talent." And as she showed during a concert to a half-full house on Saturday night at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, she's not yet a fully formed adult vocalist. Simply put, Evancho doesn't seem to know who she wants to be as a singer. As a result she doesn't offer distinctive, unique-to-her interpretations of the songs she chooses to sing - though they are indeed gorgeously sung - nor does her mixed bag of current material reflect a vision of how she'll mature. At the moment, putting Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Nessun Dorma" on the same program with Coldplay's "Fix You" and the Broadway standard "The Impossible Dream" makes for a puzzling and unconvincing juxtaposition. The closest analogue for what Evancho could become is Josh Groban, who was discovered at 17 and, not coincidentally, was also groomed by legendary music producer David Foster, master of the epic pop ballad. Groban had the advantage of having lived through more than half of his teen years before the unforgiving lights of fame found him, and now, at 35, he's an artist with an identity, personality and style to match his big pop-classical voice. Right now, Evancho has her voice, an instrument of pristine beauty. It peals with the purity of bells and lofts tones that shimmer with celestial iridescence. By an abstract, clinical scale, they are exquisite notes. But beautiful notes and phrases alone are insufficient for a successfully realized song. Lacking an apparent interpretive style or emotional connection to the material - she's much more believable when talking about what a song means to her than when she sings it - Evancho becomes a machine for beautiful notes, and after a while during a concert, that's not enough. On Saturday in Troy, over a little more than two hours on a stage set with poinsettias, roses and faux candles, Evancho performed more than 20 numbers. Five of her biggest hits, alas, were truncated into a one-verse-and-chorus medley, including "Time to Say Goodbye," "Think of Me," "Somewhere" and "The Prayer." Such medleys cheapen the individual songs, though Evancho was ably supported by music director Peter Kiesewalter, who accompanied her on grand piano and keyboards, with supplemental recorded instrumental support. (In a kind but unnecessary indulgence, Evancho took a break midway during both sets to allow Kiesewalter to perform his arrangements of overtures and entr'actes from "The Marriage of Figaro " and "Carmen.") She also sang four holiday tunes - "White Christmas," "Christmas Waltz," "Someday Christmas" and "O Holy Night" - the last of which was her best performance of the evening. Though marred by the weak diction and enunciation that affected most of the evening, the carol soared on reverent joy, its polished notes at last amplified by true emotional connection. " And we are supposed to be impressed by a food critic's review of a Jackie concert..? I am not sure he is even qualified to do a music review. But, 99% of the people reading his review will have no idea he is a food critic and take his review at base value! BTW, your link doesn't work. Unlimited Digital Access!!!! You are right. Actually the link worked when i posted it. They must have had a time limit on it.

"...a food critic..." PGA: Well, they say that very few people make money in journalism any more. Newspapers have to do anything they can to create content, & evidently sending a food critic to a concert has to suffice. At least it's well-written; this part is nice: "...Evancho has her voice, an instrument of pristine beauty. It peals with the purity of bells and lofts tones that shimmer with celestial iridescence. By an abstract, clinical scale, they are exquisite notes... Evancho becomes a machine for beautiful notes..."

Yeah, I have read other people saying that sort of thing, and it baffles me. I guess she's too subtle for some people, though she did reach him with O Holy Night. For me, her expression is all the more effective for not being exaggerated as you often see in musical theater or opera.

Maybe if Jackie gets to play Christine DaaƩ in a POTO revival people will stop saying she can't convey emotion.
