We can't decide whether this album is a success or not, only those responsible can do that. From September it will become clear how high the interest in "Jackie sings Joni" is. It will also be interesting to see which songs Jackie still has in the program, the ten from the album are not enough for a complete program. Good questions. I wondered that myself...will she sing more at these City Winery shows than just Joni Mitchell songs? She has at past concerts, but will these Winery shows be shorter than her theater concerts? I'm sure they will....restaurant shows she has done in the past have had considerably shorter set lists. I figure she will sing at least a couple of the older fan favorites like she usually does. Even at 54 Below she did that. It will be very interesting to see the set list after the first Winery show.

If the concert is called "Jackie sings Joni" Jackie should only sing Joni Mitchell songs, anything else would be nonsense. Before you presume that anything but Joni Mitchell songs would be "nonsense", consider that Jackie has always included her favorites as a medley in concert, regardless of the size of the venue or the theme of her tour. What is a Jackie concert that doesn't include something from Phantom of the Opera?...Her "muse". Furthermore, can you imagine an encore performance to a set-list of 10 Joni Mitchell songs? It's an artist/performer's prerogative to include at least one song in a concert set-list for which her or she is known. I seriously doubt that anyone in the audience will consider it nonsense if she adds her own signature to the show.

If Jackie wants good reviews and ratings for a "Jackie Evancho sings Joni Mitchell" concept concert, she shouldn't sing any other songs besides Joni's. These are now her favorite songs, why else does she record them. Why would she sing songs from the Phantom? Then she should have recorded an album of songs from the Phantom.

Your comments don't reflect reality. Jackie normally sings some songs from the latest released album at all of her shows/concerts, of course, but she also sings a few fan favorites from the past as well. She has ALWAYS done that, and as such I would expect that to continue with upcoming concerts. The early stuff will always be fan favorites...it's what she sings best, and it is what made her famous.

Maybe Jackie gives a few answers on August 31, if she is even asked about it? All the projects I have seen under "sings Joni Mitchell" contain only Joni mitchell songs. some are still on tour, were also in the City Winery.

All the projects I have seen under "sings Joni Mitchell" contain only Joni mitchell songs. some are still on tour, were also in the City Winery. "Won't succeed" at what? Jackie has a "meaningful concept" and will sing the songs from Carousel of Time. She might also add a couple of standard favorites to the set-list. There's nothing nonsensical about that. And, Jorn Swart will likely do a couple of his instrumental innovations as usual between sets. What would you suggest for an encore? Btw, what do you mean "villeict gives Jackie a few answers on August 31"? In response to your question, " Why would she sing songs from the Phantom?.....Jackie has performed songs from Phantom in concert since she was 12 years old, in recent years a medley as part of her set-list. That's because it's the songs from Phantom that inspired her to sing at age 7/8. They hold special sentiment for her to which she always pays tribute. They are what I call her "signature" songs. This is a compilation of clips from her concert in San Jose well into her The Debut tour, Nov. 2019. Listen to her standard introduction at 1:54.

She will have a new, meaningful concept...Joni Mitchell songs off of her new album. However, how does that proclude her from interjecting some fan favorites into the mix? That's actually a smart move...fans love that material the best. Again, to date she has always done that, so I'm not sure why you think that she is suddenly going to stop now. I for instance would be looking forward to hearing some songs off the new album if I went to one of these shows, but I would also be very disappointed if I didn't also get to hear at least a couple of her signature, older songs.

How long should Jackie continue to sing the old stuff until she is a hundred years old? If Jackie wants to do Justice to Joni Mitchell, she shouldn't sing any other songs. This is not a "Jackie sings Joni and a few other songs"" show, it is called "Jackie sings Joni". Why do you want to hear songs that have been sung dozens of times by Jackie? It would be nice if Jackie would give a preview of the program.

Every album she does is a new show, and every concert after every album includes some oldies...which Jackie is well aware is what her fans want. If she JUST sang songs of the new album, her attending fan base would be disappointed, and for good reason. It's great that she likes to try new stuff, and I enjoy that variety, but if it was ONLY the new stuff and none of the fan favorites...frankly that would kind of suck. Looking at the last few albums, not that popular with the fans. Jackie knows you don't put all your eggs in one basket, and she also is smart enough to give the fans what they want. Including some old stuff isn't a path to nowhere. Leaving it all out is...that's a sure way to watch your fan base shrink real fast. And I think we'll get a look at her new program in mid-September after her 54 Below shows. Hopefully someone who attended will share it.

If Jackie goes into these shows without a meaningful concept, she won't succeed. Concepts are a mixed blessing. Any theme, even "greatest hits", is a limitation. Sometimes structure and limits add value; other times, not so much. Unless they do, they're a liability. A concept may work better with a broad enough category that one doesn't need to go outside the category to have a good mix. Joni Mitchell covers may be enough for an album, but I don't know that it's enough for a live performance. A concept can also work sometimes with original material, like Moody Blues Days of Future Passed, which is a whole work and not just a collection of songs with something in common; so the concept has more meaning than to serve as a labeled container. (larger classical works are like that, and they were original too once upon a time) But that's probably a harder sell these days, with instant gratification and digital delivery and short attention spans. For smaller venues, it might even be good to be so anti-concept as to have two or three extra songs (old ones, only extra expense is rehearsal) ready to switch into the set list to be responsive to what worked best with that particular audience. For large enough audiences, they're likely to all be the same, but for smaller audiences, what they respond to can vary more, not being averaged out.

I doubt anyone in attendance would say Jackie didn't do justice to "An Evening with the New American Songbook" which was the concept of her concert tour promoting The Debut: "Jackie Evancho matches her extraordinary voice with one of the most exciting reemerging genres in popular music today..." Here is the setlist posted by Len Rausch for her last 3 concerts in 2020 -Salt Lake City UT, Parker CO and Colorado Springs CO. Notice that song titles in bold are from The Debut (New American Songbook)...7 songs in a set-list of 20, with her Puccini medley encore. I would think those paying $45 to $90 a seat for "Jackie Evancho Sings Joni Mitchell" will expect a concert consisting of more than 10 songs for an evening's entertainment. We will see in September. 1st Set List ** Pure Imagination (from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) Some Enchanted Evening (from South Pacific) Reflection (from Mulan) Phantom of the Opera Medley: Music of the Night Point of No Return All I Ask Of You I'M NOT THAT GIRL (from Wicked) SHE USED TO BE MINE (from Waitress) My Heart Will Go On (from Titanic) Orchestral Instrumental Medley: Selections from “West Side Story” Somewhere (from West Side Story) How Great Thou Art 2nd Set List ** Misty BURN (from Hamilton) REQUIEM (from Dear Evan Hanson) FALLING SLOWLY (from Once) ONCE UPON A DECEMBER (from Anastasia) ANOTHER DAY/NO DAY BUT TODAY (from Rent) Orchestral Instrumental Medley: Selections from “The Wizard of Oz” Somewhere Over the Rainbow (from The Wizard of Oz) The Impossible Dream (from Man of La Mancha) Encore: Mio Babbino Caro/Nessun Dorma Mashup ** The set lists were identical for all three performances.
