Review from Mike Tigfan
Jackie showed up in a dress last night in Cerritos, a little black one. The top part resembled the black romper she's been wearing lately. She wore the same high-heeled boots she wore in San Jose. Either before or after Reflection she tripped onstage, then began discussing how she often walks right into a wall or curtain when leaving the stage and how she's glad that the audience can't see her when she does this. She tripped a couple more times during the show, holding up three fingers and smiling after the third time. Having some fun at her own expense.
I've never cared much for medleys, but the Phantom medley with abbreviated MOTN didn't irk me as much as the first time I heard it last month. And I have to say that All I Ask Of You was the best I've ever heard it, especially because Jackie ended it so powerfully. Jackie then explained how she researched Broadway shows, particularly Wicked. She stumbled again and said, "Second time...don't you just hate heels?" Before I'm Not That Girl Jackie said that she interprets it as more than just not being the one a boy chose, but rather being other than what is superficial. She said, "I'm blonde, but I'm actually pretty smart". Before She Used to Be Mine, Jackie spoke of wondering what happned to the person she used to be. "Where is that 13 year-old?" I miss the belting of the earlier performances of this song. But it could be better she doesn't do that. I'm just guessing. Jackie said she saw The Waitress. Earlier she mentioned not having seem Hamilton. Somewhere ended wonderfully with one of Jackie's signature bell tones. This is another of the doing-it-better-than-ever songs.
Before How Great Thou Art, Jackie said there would be an intermission after the song and there *might* be costume change. Then, in a New York accent, she told us to "Buy some stuff, get some fresh air, go for a walk...what evah ya do". It was hilarious.
Same dress in the 2nd half. The other one didn't fit, we were told. I noticed during Requiem there were recorded tracks playing because I could hear the mandolin. Falling Slowly was beautiful, but like She Used to Be Mine, she didn't belt it out as it was done in the recording. Dedicated Another Day/No Day But Today to Juliet again. "Strength, courage and grace". Jackie said a world that celebrates diversity is a world she will always believe in. Jackie stood while she sang Over the Rainbow this time, though a stool was available. Jackie was having a lot of fun. Even if she hadn't flat-out told us that, it would have been obvious.
