To think, I toyed with the idea of passing up this concert. I didn't feel well and maybe I just wait for Las Vegas next week for my first experience of Jackie's new show. Dumbest idea I've had as a Jackie fan since I passed on attending the 2nd tv special. This time I saved myself because I was just so curious. Opening song, Pure Imagination, began with Jackie singing from the wings for a bit before entering the stage. Some Enchanted Evening, best rendition I've ever heard. Though, was only my second time hearng it live. The Phantom medley turned out well. My only issue is that in Music of the Night one of the big notes is removed. Jackie told us that when she first started singing, someone gave her a book that was all about the musical, Wicked" She then sang I'm Not That Girl, after which Jackie mentioned that when she bowed she noticed how sparkly her knees were. She Used To Be Mine was enjoyable, but I prefer the recorded version and the earlier live performances to last night's version. The part that begins "You're not what I asked for..." just didn't have the anguish of those earlier versions. Maybe Jackie was just enjoying herself too much. She asked us if we were having fun. which resulted in clapping and whistling. She said, "I'm having so much fun. It would suck if I was the only one". She apologized for drinking so much water. She had a dry throat and a slight cold. She kept having to walk back toward the piano for water until bringing it upstage with her. Made me wonder why she didn't have the little table near her with water, as she had before. After saying she idolized Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion, sang My Heart Will Go On. Introduced the band: her musical director and pianist Jorn Swart, drummer Devin Collins, one violinist Ms. Conner, one cellist Ms. Chong. First time I'd ever seen this configuration. Made me wonder if it was Jorn who wrote their parts. There was a lot of pizzicato. In fact, the cellist would sometimes play like a jazz bassist. Early on I didn't care much for Devin's drumming at times. I thought it was too loud and it reminded me of marching bands at halftime shows. He has toned it down and plays more subtly. Good on him. Of course, maybe he always has and it could be blamed on cell phone videos. Jackie left and the band played an instrumental that was based on Maria from West Side Story. Jackie returned and the band segued into Somewhere from West Side Story. It was nicely done. Then, How Great Thou Art. Best version I've ever heard. Long standing ovation, then intermission. I have in notes that Jackie did The Way We Were to open the second half. I might be mistaken. I am open to correction. Jackie talked about walking down her favorite street in New York, where she sees all the names on the marquees. Then, a slew of songs from The Debut: Burn, Requiem, Falling Slowly, Once Upon a December, Another Day/No Day But Today. Before the latter, Jackie dedicated the song to her sister, Juliet. Said that she's grateful for Juliet's love and support, that Juliet has gone through so much and is one of the most courageous persons she knows. Jackie appreciates that Juliet pushes her to be the best version of herself. Coincidentally, and of some concern, right after Falling Slowly, we heard Jackie say suddenly, "We're OK. I was just a little dizzy for a moment. I'm OK". I was almost not going to mention it. Cold medicine, maybe. She wasn't hobbling or anything. Her energy was not flagging. In fact, was strong as ever in the encore. So, fingers crossed, it's nothing. Let's not let our imaginations run wild. Another instrumental from the band: medley from Rent and Greatest Showman on Earth. I thought it was meandering and I lost interest. I much preferred thhe earier instrumental. Over the Rainbow was interesting. Nobody sings it better than Jackie. She spent most of the song sitting with her legs crossed on a chair or bench--I couldn't see which. I'm guessing these modes of presentation are things Will Nunziata works on with Jackie. Before the last song, Impossible Dream, Jackie thanked the band and her sound engineer, Will Reed, formerly known as "Will the sound guy". I was pleased to learn that Will was still with Jackie. Encore: O Mio Babbino Caro/Nessun Dorma and Somebody to Love (Queen, not Jefferson Airplane) I was fully prepared to be disappointed in the new show. But I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it so much. It was apparent that a lot of thought went into how the songs were presented and that a lot of work went into executing the ideas.
