24 reviews presently (23 five-star) including this one just added. I see this often, downgrading an album for reasons other than an opinion of the artists work. The guy above who rated the album 3 stars apparently decided Jackie deserved more credit from him and changed his review to 4 stars. Listening again to Jackie, one sometimes realizes there is more to her music than what he hears upon first impression. I won't say that's the reason this gentleman changed his mind, but it is often true, as many have attested.

4 star review: Jackie has a better voice than when she was youngEnjoyed this album. However, the song choices could have been better. I hope she can choose some original material for her next album. 4 star review: Another wonderful performance by Jackie EvanchoJackie continues to slowly evolve her repertoire and find new ways to exercise that massive talent. Debut is another successful milepost in that progression. 3 star review: DisappointedVoice has not continued strong.

This is the first album of Jackie's I have not purchased.
Not because I think any less of Jackie or her voice, but simply because these songs do nothing for me. Broadway music? Meh. I'm sure some folks love it, but I don't follow the happenings on Broadway.
I'm a big fan of Jackie singing the classical style of music that started her career, or even original songs, so I'll wait to see if she finds her way back to those. I was happy to see her choose that for her recent AGT performances.

I have to admit me too. These songs do nothing for me, except for "Somewhere", which I purchased individually. Nothing to do with Jackie, I just dont know these songs and they don't really do anything for me. I will say though, if I had to listen to them, I'd pick Jackie to sing them. lol

That's a good point.
I can imagine Jackie's version of those songs (I have listened to them all on-line) are as good as they get.

That's a good point. I can imagine Jackie's version of those songs (I have listened to them all on-line) are as good as they get. I'm afraid not. I didn't really want to write this as I've been a big fan of Jackie for a long time. But listen to Sara Bareilles' original of She used to be mine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53GIADHxVzM). It's more powerful than Jackie's. Unfortunately, and I didn't want to admit this to myself for a while but the latest album is only ok. There are still the noticeable intakes of breath, which distract from the singing. While they're fairly good, they're not spectacular. The 10-12 year old Jackie was an extraordinary miracle. But I'm afraid she hasn't improved to the point where the adult is outstanding. Had she done fewer albums and concerts, instead working on improving her technique, it might be different. But I'm afraid both The Debut and the China Got Talent performance are average among talented adult singers. I'm sad to say this but it's the honest truth. I hope in the future she returns to being extraordinary but it needs some time off for training.

Just because she doesn't spend years at some respected institution like Juilliard or at least Berklee (or CMU or Duquesne) doesn't mean she isn't learning or training. She's had some training before in what was likely stage presence related matters; and has an acting coach on board now as well as an overall concert director (who can probably tell her what to do, which a music director/lead accompanist can't properly do). She's consulted various others on specific matters, too.
The myth of an untrained Athena springing from the forehead of Zeus is in the long run more myth than fact.
Noticeable breathing on a recording is a matter of choice, not even technique; it could largely be edited out (as well as avoided), yet it isn't (although high quality editing takes time and $$). Live OTOH, using new styles and the techniques appropriate to performing them with reasonable safety, is not going to be flawless from the start; unless of course one spends months rather than days or weeks in coaching and practicing, which AIN'T LIKELY TO HAPPEN, given the historical pattern of learn by _doing_.
Not everyone learns the same way. Some would flounder without a structured environment, while others would be bored and annoyed by one, and would do far better mostly on their own, with access to experts as needed.

Thanks for posting that link; I like it but I can't see that Jackie's is not as powerful: she throws the kitchen sink at it whereas Sara's in comparison seems to me a bit sluggish. Jackie sings it at a better tempo and her voice is superior as far as tone and expression go too.

How Sara sang the song is how she wanted the song to be sung at the point where it is sung in the musical. The musical Waitress is based upon the Independent film of the same name that was produced in 2007 and actually was shown at Sundance and eventually grossed globally close to what Robert Redford's film that Jackie was in ( The Company You Keep) also did globally. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waitress_(film)en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waitress_(musical)In it-is-a-small-world scenario, the original musical first opened in my neck of the woods at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It eventually got to broadway. So even though the film had comedic overtones, the story of an unhappy marriage with an abusive and controlling husband and an unexpected pregnancy provides drama. It would have been pretty hard for Jackie to understand what Jenna Hunterson had been through and was experiencing when in an abusive relationship for years, working to survive and make money to leave her husband, becoming pregnant and eventually giving birth to a baby girl where Jenna had been torn as to whether or not to go through with the pregnancy. So Jackie sang the song in a different manner for what Jackie could imagine.

So Jackie sang the song in a different manner for what Jackie could imagine. Right but what was so remarkable about Jackie originally was not just her voice, although that was extraordinary, but her gift for musical interpretation. I was one of those in awe of how a 10 year old was interpreting these adult songs like she'd lived them. How the emotion and meaning of a song seemed to be channelled through someone who couldn't have had such experiences in her life. I don't know why that isn't there on this album. I hope she regains that gift for interpretation.
