Ellen's Producers wanted Jackie to sing a pop song. Lisa and Mike refused. Ellen's Producers cancelled her appearance. This from Lisa's mouth back in her Amazon days. One thing about Lisa's explanation doesn't completely ring true - This would've most likely been back in the pre-AGT days, which were also of course the PTAD days. There are several selections on PTAD that aren't strictly speaking "classical" or necessarily even CC. Jackie had sent Ellen an "audition video of sort" pre-AGT days, and Jackie was indeed singing "pop" songs then. One of which I was enjoying before either of Jackie's parents were born, A Thousand Stars, originally released by Kathy Young and The Innocents in 1960. Jackie Evancho - A Thousand Stars

The compromise could have been, Jackie singing a pop song using her classical voice. Just seems so logical. Ah yes. Jackie, in her very best Montserrat Caballe voice singing You ain't nothing but a hound dog. Jackie could always sing "pop", she just realized so could most anyone. Jackie also realized that she could express more with her classical voice, while sounding exceptional, extremely exceptional.

But, I recall in those days after AGT that she often said "I never really had a pop voice" (in her own mind), and that would probably have been her reluctance to perform a pop song for a TV audience. And, I think Lisa and Mike respected her determination to sing what she enjoyed the most and related to vocally, to "express the emotion", as she would say of classical and classical crossover songs.

If he and jamesn are correct, Ellen's producers would have been impressed with PTAD or whatever they previewed before Jackie aquired the "WOW factor". If it was after AGT, Jackie was by that time dedicated to CC and not performing or recording pop songs. Demanding she sing pop on the show would have been inconsistent with what she was becoming recognized for and identified with. Nevertheless, that may have been the case, buy they were inspired by her early pop recordings.

Jackie Evancho - A Thousand Stars I wonder what made her parents pick this song for her to sing of all the songs from around 1960. As you said it was before their time. She certainly does an excellent job. By the way, there are videos of Kathy Young singing this in her 60's.

Facebook: Ellen DeGeneres September 15, 2010 ยท Jackie Evancho you are absolutely amazing. I want you on my show so I can meet you immediately. You are incredible.
Jackie's AGT audition was aired on Sept. 7, 2010, so it would seem Ellen herself was inspired by Jackie's audition performance. But according to Rob49, Ellen's producers were aware of Jackie's pre-AGT recordings. So maybe Ellen suggested to her producers that they schedule Jackie for her show, but they had it in mind that she should sing something from her pre-AGT pop repertoire they had seen or heard. Thus, the refusal from Lisa and Mike perhaps with pressure from Jackie's label, as rlhamil suggested. Just guessing.

Kathy Young and The Innocents released "A Thousand Stars" in 1960, but even if neither Mike or Lisa were Oldies Fans, they could have heard, or seen it at sometime. Or they may have heard the cover Rosie & The Originals released of "A Thousand Stars" in 1999. A Thousand Stars - Rosie & The Originals

What Ellen wanted was the Jackie from the AGT days. What doesn't make any sense, if true, is that they wanted Jackie to sing using her pop voice and not her CC one. That is the part of this story that still makes zero sense.

There was some speculation among fans that the team was a tad miffed at Ellen for not picking up on Jackie earlier, so the heck with Ellen now. (then lol) That was one of several plausible theories.

I could definitely see Lisa E. telling Ellen to go to hell because they turned down Jackie before AGT. That seems very Lisa like.

Ellen's Producers wanted Jackie to sing a pop song. Lisa and Mike refused. Ellen's Producers cancelled her appearance. This from Lisa's mouth back in her Amazon days. That was an understandable reason for refusal from Lisa and Mike in my opinion. Ellen's loss. Certainly would have been. But the whole point of the Jackie sensation was a little girl who sounded like an adult, semi-classical singer. Can't imagine any TV producer asking her to sing pop, sounding like any other 10 year old. However, the usual reason for this kind of ban is competition between talk shows for the star of the moment. They all want first dibs and bear a grudge if they don't get it. Didn't Jackie appear on Oprah's afternoon show after AGT. That would have done it. And I believe Oprah had a bigger audience at the time.

(then lol) That was one of several plausible theories. That is the one, that was the reason. Imagine that Jackie had appeared on the Ellen show earlier singing a pop song. The chain of events would have been very different, perhaps to the exclusion of an AGT audition, or one singing a Classical song anyway. Would David Foster have encouraged her to pursue a CC career, or not? We may never have heard O Mio Babbino Caro from the little girl in the red dress. Or, we may have, despite an Ellen Show appearance, because it's been Jackie's destiny to pursue Classical Crossover.
Whatever the circumstance and reason for Lisa and Mike's refusal of the Ellen Show appearance, or for the cancellation, it indirectly set the stage for Jackie's career as it is.
