But, as I understood it, royalties are automatically assigned to the performer or performers if the track is used. It's part of the long time regulations governing the music business. Are you talking about what happens with radio play? The songwriters get royalties for each spin the track gets, not the singer, unless they also wrote the song. But radio play is terrific promotion for the singers and helps with album and concert ticket sales. No. I'm talking about SALES of the track, either as part of the album or as a single download. I know a non-songwriter doesn't benefit from radio play.

Oh, you forgot too? I don't feel so bad now. Thanks Wayne. Is the Jackie/Streisand recording of Somewhere a duet? I said it might be called a "mix", though I call it a duet. cer didn't call it anything, just that it "doesn't count as a duet". wayne didn't say Elvis is dead. anonynous calls it a "virtual duet". But, Jackie's part was real. Maybe cer would do some research to learn the technical term since it was important to take issue with it. Jackie did a "no count virtual duet voice-over mix" of Hallelujah with Peter Hollens. I'll call it a "duet". Just me, but I'd call something a mix if neither track was performed with reference to the other (which may require substantial processing to match pitch, speed, etc). A live duet uniquely has both performers interacting with each other; but whatever name one calls the middle state between live duet and mix, it's where one of the performers (could be instrumental, too) is adjusting their performance by listening to a recording of the other as they're performing. edit: for all practical purposes, I don't think a live studio duet using a pre-recorded instrumental backing track is all that different from one singer singing along with a recording of another (and backing track), because either way, the duet-ists aren't co-leading, they're taking cues from an existing track. Now, if they're capable enough to sing their live studio duet a cappella (given just an intro that they're listening to but isn't part of the final result), that's different, because the backing track could be done later to match them, so in that case, the principals can lead. edit: fixed typo - that should be "live duet" not "life duet", sorry...

Your description is congruent with the studio technician whom I quoted. A recording of one performer adjusting to the recording of the other at different times and/or places is referred to as a "duet", though not a "live duet". Therefore, the Jackie/Streisand recording of Somewhere is generally accepted as being called a duet. The term duet does not necessarily mean the artists have to be performing together on stage. I would call that a "duet performance" and the other a "duet recording" to distinguish the two. I assume that "live duet" recordings are less common these days because the available technology doesn't require the artists to be present and performing together.

Maybe when this American Idol gig is up, Jackie can duet with her buddie Gabby. (Last three) Put on a Classical Country night at the barn. I have been following Gabby on AI, and think she has a real shot at winning, but for the record, Jackie does not know her, and they are not friends. Yes, they are both from Pittsburgh, but do not know each other !!

Thanks for the info Wayne, I was not aware of their contact at the contest. I was curious, so a couple of days ago I asked Lisa, and she said they do not know each other, and are not friends !!

For me, still one of the greatest moments in music history. A little girl, named Jackie Evancho, sings with the legend and all time great Barbra Streisand. If I close my eyes, I hear two outstanding voices on the same level. Since I first heard and saw this masterpiece, I always get goose bumps. Thank you, David Foster, for this production. Could not agree more. This duet is certainly on a par with the Bocelli, Domingo and Jackson duets. And the fact that two great female legends, Brightman and Streisand, gave their consent to sing with Jackie speaks volumes about the quality of her voice and her personality at such a young age. I am a longtime fan of Barbra and her recognition of Jacqueline Marie Evancho's talent comes as no surprise to me.

One of many reasons I consider Jackie an excellent vocalist and performer is her ability and good sense to compliment her duet partners. She can be powerful when it's appropriate to the dynamics of the song, thus matching her partner for beautiful and impressive harmony. She is also capable of softening her high notes to give her partner's role the emphasis when it is called for. She never tries to be the center of attention, both out of respect for her partner and because her interest is to portray the music as it was composed and intended. Just as an instrumentalist would not attempt to stand out in the orchestra but provide what is demanded by the conductor, Jackie is dedicated to enhancing the music with her vocal instrument in whatever way is conducive to the designed affect. She is quite versatile with an apparent natural ability to harmonize spontaneously, not surprising given she has perfect relative pitch. There are certain vocalists Jackie has performed with, opera singers with years of training for example, who have more powerful voices than Jackie's, but they have moderated their power to compliment Jackie. That's what true musicians do. To me it doesn't matter whether or not she can match their power, because a duet is not a contest but an art. Two professional performers dedicated to the music will use their respective capabilities with regard for each other and the music. The phrase "holding her own", said often of her, means to me that she is capable of providing what is necessary. An example is the last note of the Con Te Partiro duet with Andrea Bocelli, or that powerful high register harmony with Fernando Varela in A Thousand Years which provoked a standing ovation that continued for 30 seconds as they walked hand in toward the audience to finish the song. Not even being there, one would know it was truly impressive. And there have been other examples. In a live duet performance one must also take into account mic settings that may inadvertently or purposely favor one artist, and also the acoustical quality of the recording environment. Sometimes that may be perceived as one artist having naturally projected more power than the other. Another consideration of unbalanced dynamics is the intention of a studio recording to allow the artist who's album is being made to dominate somewhat, such as Placido Domingo in his duets with Jackie for his Christmas album. One thing that detracts from a would-be pleasing duet performance is a miss-match of vocal character, tonal quality or timber. Strangely, I would not have expected Barbra Streisand's voice to be complimentary to Jackie's, but what a wonderful duet that was. Speculating whether or not Jackie and any other artist would be a successful match is subjective guessing to a degree. Jackie has done many duets over the years, and I think she has succeeded in doing her part to make them a joy to listen to and experience, because of her vocal abilities, her respect for her partners and their respect for her, as well as her dedication to the integrity of the music. Not everyone will agree about what partners have been a good pairing for Jackie, but that doesn't diminish the validity of one's own perception of what is pleasing or moving to him or her.
This is all my perception and opinion of course.

Jackie can more then hold her own with Andrea Bocelli. However, could Jackie hold her own with someone like Lady Ga Ga!?

Is Lady Ga Ga a "true musician" who would "moderate" her power if necessary? I think so, because in my view she is an artist. She can over-power other singers but wouldn't. Regardless who Jackie performs with, I think it's also a matter of choosing a song appropriate to their combined capabilities for the best effect.
Now, that's one of those one-liners where I have to ask, were you being humorous (no smiley face)? I assumed not.

Lawrence, Don't waste your time with this guy. He just wants to incite an argument, that is his only goal. He is not a Jackie fan and never will be.

This is an example of why it doesn't matter that a duet partner may have a more powerful voice than Jackie's. Any one of The Tenors could easily over-power her without a mic. It's all about the performance and the presentation, the voices and making beautiful music.

I enjoy everything she does with the Tennors. I hope she does more with them in the future as they are a great match up.

This is also a vivid example of why we are suffering through that agonizing part of Jackie's career that transitions the little girl depicted in this video, to the wholesome, mature female that we are following today. She came into the public eye as a ten year old; A sweet little girl, that some would opine, had the voice of an Angel, that through the next several years, produced an EP, several CD's and DVD's, that performed through PBS specials, private weddings and gigs for royalty and political figures, that appeared for charitable events and the very wealthy, that has performed at hundreds of venues across the U.S.; and all the while growing out of the child-like dimensions into a shapely, beautiful women that we see on the stage today. Lisa once said "We are starting over!". As her fans, what we have witnessed is a child star slowly fading into obscurity while managing her career as she progresses into adulthood. I predict the bumpy ride is almost over!!
