If you are interested in the history of the song "Silent Night" you can find information and the whole story on this site: www.stillenacht.com/en/a-global-hit-is-born/the-song-silent-night/Since the song was composed in Austria, my home country, I'm very proud, because it is the most successful song worldwide ever written. It is translated in more then 300 languages and dialects. And, exactly tomorrow, December 24, 2018, it is the 200th anniversary of the first time the song was sung in a church in Oberndorf, a small town near Salzburg. I guess, the following video is close to the original version of the song. It was just performed by one guitar player - Franz Xaver Gruber, Teacher, musician and composer of the melody - and Joseph Mohr, Priest and author of the song (in this video played by actors). There are also six verses. And the original is, of course, in German.

This video should be mandatory for every US (anglo) musician, because every year I get kind of multiple heart attacks when I see the kitsch, over the top cover versions. It has to be sung simple lyrical...but most of US (anglo) musicians try to show off...if they were on Broadway, or operatic with tons of vibrato, tremolo...or inredible musicians like Jacob Collier on Justin Kauflin album trying to show how much harmonies one could put in, Aretha Franklin far too loud like many others...it seems to be a cultural thing ...totally misunderstanding...there is a new born child...he shall sleep...everyone else is sleeping...only angels are watching.
